Interesting thoughts - but actually they are. Regarding the current distress, the article about the couple on vacation in Maui did say that their first 'go to' was the radio. 

And I can't speak for other locations, but for sure radio is the #1 go to for most of our folks in Alaska, as it is almost certain that it is the only medium available (outside of NOAA/NWS which has its own rats nest of budgetary problems)

The miniscule chance of a  (unsurvivable, in my view) WWIII scenario pales in comparison to the clear, repeated threats of fire, tsunami, flood, and hurricane/tornadoes. AM or not, that is what needs to get fixed (including getting NWS is step with the rest of the CAP world).

Laying the responsibility (and unfunded mandates) at broadcasters' feet, and ignoring the other outlets (WEA, NWS, etc.) is not going to make this all work effectively.
