MISSED DEADLINE: EMERGENCY ALERTS -- Today was supposed to be the day that
wireless emergency alerts featured support for enhanced alerting. But FEMA
informed the FCC that the system "will not be ready to support certain
improvements" in time, according to a brief FCC notice issued Friday. In
response, a FEMA spokesperson told POLITICO that amid "rigorous testing"
of the software aimed at supporting these enhancements, "it was determined
that the scheduled release date needs to be delayed until necessary
further technical engineering changes are completed."
-- FEMA's spokesperson declined to offer a "new go-live date" amid ongoing
evaluation. FEMA is meanwhile asking alerting authorities to contact their
software vendors to make sure they'll be ready to support enhanced alerts,
the spokesperson added. And mark your calendars: FEMA acting Administrator
Peter Gaynor will testify about the agency's disaster readiness before the
House Homeland Security panel on Wednesday.
