Clay - let's put that urban legend to rest quickly. A appellate court panel upheld that someone was guilty for stealing trade secrets by unauthorized access to a computer network, by using a password without permission.
The appellate court explicitly noted that the case was not about passwords. A dissenting judge tried to make a highly speculative point by arguing that the case was about passwords - so this judges over reaching speculation was taking up by some of the media.
No, you will not go to jail for sharing your Netflix password with a friend.
Yes, you could go to jail by logging into someone else is computer network without permission, even if you know a username and password. Even if that username/password is discoverable, you need permission to access a computer or network.

Does anyone wonder what the ratings of Congress are in the tank?

The United States has more laws than any country on earth, and it is getting
to the point where you can't do anything without breaking a law somewhere.
For instance, I learned today that giving your Netflix password to a friend
is a felony in the US.
