Not really a new phenomenon.  In the early 70s I worked with DEC PDP-8's & 11's, with the rows of lamps showing the address bus as well as selectable data busses.  Then along about the mid-70s they introduced the PDP-11/34 with just a row of 7-segment displays that didn't show anything unless the processor was halted. Later, all interfacing was done thru a console terminal that showed even less.  Kind of took the coolness out of working in a computer room.
