Speaking as the guy who decided on DB connectors for the latest generation of Axia nodes, I can tell you that I wholeheartedly agree with your discomfort over the RJ audio thing.  I know some folks like it, but it always seemed to me to be messy, especially when RS dongles were involved.  Outside of radio, the concept is generally rejected.  Even if you want to use adapter dongles, the DB connector is more efficient and a cleaner installation.  There are several DB-XLR or DB-TRS adapter cables available.
