there is almost no open programming on C band. Most is MPEG on Ku band. I would want a larger than 1 meter antenna for that. An old Winegard 3 meter dish works fine for me. The receivers are cheap. If you go to Lyngsat.com, all the data is posted by satellite listing originator, MPEG format, transponder, sat orbital position and a spectrum display so you can make sure you have the right sat. If you can find an old TVRO home receiver that has the sats programmed in for auto scan, you can enjoy a lot of TV for free.
Henry, (7th in the us to have a home TVRO. :-)

You might consider a Free-To-Air MPEG satellite system. A receiver and
a one meter Ku-band antenna and LNBF is about $200. Add a salvaged
C-band antenna and you'll be able to receive most of the basic OTA network
signals. While there is an initial equipment cost, there are no program
subscription costs. Take a look at www.global-cm.net.
