I use metal-cased EMI filters (Corcom, Cornell-Dubilier, etc.) and mount them in a square metal electrical box. MOVs can be added across the load side of the filter for extra protection. Typical current ratings are 5 to 30 amps, and the series impedance is similar to that of a lighting choke (about 3k ohms at 1000 kHz.)
These filters are often seen at hamfests for $5 or so, or you can find them at surplus dealers:
