We did the same thing at Forest View HS, Arlington Heights, IL. for
WFVH-FM in the late 70's. All 10W of Class D power.

The electronics teacher was the station advisor and he made sure all the
students tested and passed their 3rd class during their freshman year on
field trip(s)to the FCC office in Chicago. That and the studios were
also in his class/lab room. Broadcast Endorsement was bonus points.

A few guys each year tested for their second or first and went down with
the freshman class to take the exams. FCC field guys loved it when a
class of 20 or so kids showed up to take their tests and see them all pass.

There were at least a half dozen 1st class students running around that
high school at any given time until the station went dark in 1979. I
think my class had the last of the first class guys as the school
shifted focus away from radio the year before we went dark and much
emphasis was taken away from the licenses.

Why would my school mount a field trip to such an "unusual" place? Easy: WVPH Piscataway, 90.3 FM, "The Voice of Piscataway High". All blazing 10 watts of it.
