I think it is a very quick and accessible tool allowing some savvy
operators the ability to compete on FM's play surface. Nothing more.
Bigger signals outrun the FM's anyway and they're only really beneficial
at night when the DA's really get tight.  Never the less, the listener is
drawn away from the AM band.  So what's the gain for AM?
