I just put the coordinates from the FCC Web site into Google Earth and took a look.

It doesn't look like the tower I remember, and this one's on the beach rather than at the end of a pier. But it might be the same site, even though none of the buildings looks familiar.

But 1985 was a long time ago, and a lot of things might have changed since then. Another site I knew well, that of KDON 1460 AM on the beach near Watsonville, has been gone for many years. The station went off the air not long after I moved back to the East Coast and the site was razed. I understand there's a new, unrelated 1460 in the market now.
