    I suspect that copper is/was used as it's (relatively) easy to install,
and it conducts better than steel
    so the resultant 'ground" is now more reflective, shall I say

    True.Considering that the other half of the dipole (in a conventional
tower) is already comprised entirely of steel, and for good reason...

    I have a paper around here somewhere that discusses the various aspects
of buried radials. If/when I find it, I'll post it.
