What most likely kicked off the MW-1 was not the positive peeks but lots of low frequency audio (>50 Hz. in the spot)
The station I worked at in college, WSSO in Starkville MS, got an MW-1 in 1979. We were still playing vinyl records. Not long after the MW-1 went in we would get an occational PA overload. We discovered this was caused by holding the record while the turntable was running (slip cueing) and this generated low frequencies from the vibration of the stylus while the record was being held. Proof of the MW-1 showed it would overload on 20 Hz. 100% modulation. Processing was a CBS Audimax/Volumax which passed the low frequencies quite well.

When we got it installed one of the salesman did a couple of commercials that kicked off the transmitter with positive peeks. For a few days it was standard procedure for the disk jockey to start that spot, jump up and punch the transmitter back on and, get back to the board in time to fire off the next spot
