And Chrysler used to have great car radios. GM radios in cars have been dullards since the late 80's save a very few models.  The one in my Taurus with AM stereo stinks on AM, but the FM is very good.  The aftermarket Kenwood in my 2006 Ranger actually is very good on AM unless you get close to the transmitter site and then the signal gets wider than a barn door. The FM is spectacular, but <AHEMMMMM> I work at an AM station.

It's quite true that with the great majority of am receivers it might 
be a struggle to tell what sounds good. The radio in my 2004 Dodge 
Ram is typical, FM is passable but underpowered, and the AM is the 
usual 50 cents of added circuitry with a if bandwidth of maybe 4kc at 
the most -
