I too have experienced AM radio blackout in parts of the Upper Penninsula of
Michigan. However, I recall good nite skywave reception. Isnt thay why
they installed that massive long wave antenna up there to communicate with
our worldwide submarine fleet?

In theory an antenna in free space is. But antennas don't exist in free
space.
I once went to a certain Fort Worth based consumer electronics store
to buy an adapter to use a CB whip on my scanner for low band DX. She
told me with a straight face that it wouldn't work because CB antennas
are for transmitting and not receiving.
