1610 kHz was the expanded band migration channel assigned to KALT(now
KPYN), 900 kHz, Atlanta, TX. Atlanta, Texas is outside the coordination
distance with respect to both Canada and Mexico so the US could use 1610
there. The 1610 license was canceled in 2005 for being dark more than
one year. As to why it was allowed to lapse, perhaps the 900 kHz
facility had better coverage? Theoretically, the 1 mV/m contour extends
further with 1 kW on 900 kHz than with 10 kW on 1610 kHz.
