Oh, what a memory! One of my "stops" was KWAK in Stuttgart, AR starting in 1957. Our console was a very close kin to this WE. The station owner was an engineer and we had a building full of hand-me-down equipment stuffed into an old edge of town two story farm-house style building. But I never worked in a place where the equipment worked in better or was better maintained.
He was "old school" and woe be to a young announcer who ever grabbed a patch cord by the cord rather than the plug itself. (Been there, done that, got the scar to show for it! )
We didn't have the two little side panels on ours. A wooden frame about 3.5 inches high and the exact size of the console footprint sat on the desk under the Western Electric. It contained key-switches that performed the traditional [Program-Off-Audition] function for each channel. The key switches ABOVE the pots selected the input source for that channel.
In the last year I have made contact with the two announcers who worked there when I did, and just this week I learned that the widow of the Owner/Engineer remains among the earth's population at age 90 or so. She was very much a part of the station. I must take the time to write to her.
