Tom, I was talking specifically about Barix units, not MP3 coding in
general. The typical Barix units (the 100 series) have VBR MP3
encoding that, according to their specs, at the highest quality level
should achieve around 192 kbps. I very much doubt there's any sort of
LAME-quality code in there, otherwise it would sound much better. It's
probably off-the-shelf hardware encoder of some kind inside.
