Um...

MP3 encoding can be run as high as 320 kbps.  I have most of my library 
encoded that high.

and when a lower encoded track plays, it's obvious...

As to what version of LAME_enc (the MP3 codec) the Barix boxes use... 
that may be all the higher it can go...

But I have a hard time telling the difference between 320 kbps MP3 and 
uncompressed wave... of course, neither sounds as good as

analog
