On the topic "How to keep small town radio profitable":
Something that works very well for us at WCJW is a Radio Auction which
we hold several times a year. We conduct these on Saturday mornings
-- in fact, our Valentine's auction takes place tomorrow. It's an
opportunity to have some fun, clear out surplus items we've received
in trade (which we can't use), bring in cash to pay the bills, give
our advertisers some extra exposure, and help our listeners to save
money. We focus on 13 items every half hour and then move on to the
next bunch.
Here's tomorrow's list of items and list prices; Good luck with your bids!

We just make mention that the County Shools are closed today, and that's it. We get "0" calls for school closings. Technology has killed that for us little AM Stations, even in the rural areas.
