Of course it works well using VPN to your office -- they don't have
any firewalls, or protection at all.
When I go into any hotel on a public system or any public system, the
very first thing I do is either VPN to the office, or VPN to MY OWN
ROUTER.
I worked for a company with a bad Internet policy, so I even set up
VPN for AIM (iChat actually), or if I was doing something like reading
my own mail, I would open a session to my own router at Equinix in
Ashburn, VA, a HUGE colocation and peering facility.
Ronald Regan said, "Trust, but verify." My mantra is, "Don't trust
anyone, and then verify."
It is absolutely how many systems which appear to be public systems
are people's computers spoofing being a WiFi Hot Spot, but are
actually middle men, waiting to gather information.
