Of course it works well using VPN to your office -- they don't have  
any firewalls, or protection at all.

When I go into any hotel on a public system or any public system, the  
very first thing I do is either VPN to the office, or VPN to MY OWN  
ROUTER.

I worked for a company with a bad Internet policy, so I even set up  
VPN for AIM (iChat actually), or if I was doing something like reading  
my own mail, I would open a session to my own router at Equinix in  
Ashburn, VA, a HUGE colocation and peering facility.

Ronald Regan said, "Trust, but verify."  My mantra is, "Don't trust  
anyone, and then verify."

It is absolutely how many systems which appear to be public systems  
are people's computers spoofing being a WiFi Hot Spot, but are  
actually middle men, waiting to gather information.
