When I worked for WJZ-TV in Baltimore, it was a union shop. As explained to me, we had live talent and it was the talent's union(s) that would not allow the talent to work in a non-union shop. The engineering staff was well paid for the area and really didn't need a union because the whole company was engineering oriented at the time. It was the live talent's shop rules that ruled the roost. That was my positive interface with a union shop.
My negative interface was many years later at General Electric's Advanced Development Group in Rancho Cordova (the ranch), CA. I made the "mistake" of clicking a 'scope-probe onto a test-point in some equipment I designed. The technician's union filed a grievance. My punishment was "retraining." I had to watch a videotape.
Cheers,

I should have said they DON'T regret being in their unions.
