Of course, all guy wires are galvanized. Still, like galvanized
towers, they need additional protection in order to extend their lives.
When installing a new tower, one of the best things you can do is
paint it. Not just the parts scratched by erecting it, but the entire
thing.
The next thing you should do is grease the guy wires. The grease will
keep the zinc from being eroded, at least for a while. The best way
is to do it as the wire comes off the spool. On larger towers, you
can do it after the tower is up, but that is more expensive, and more
dangerous.
On small towers, with small guy wires, it is far too dangerous to
grease the guys later in life, so once they start to pit, they have to
be replaced. However, on larger towers, the guys can be greased over
and over. This can greatly increase the life of the guys. Having
written this, I am wondering if it is still legal to go down the guy.
