One possibility is that the 'lastest and greatest' software update did not contain the driver(s) necessary to interface with your hard disk. This sometimes happens when you have older hardware. Boot your original installation disk and select the "repair" option. If you don't have the "original," just boot ANY XP installation media and select the repair option.

Not even in safe mode.  I don't understand why windows would
want to wipe out a perfectly good working computer in critical service which has totally screwed up my Monday!!!  They are both XP OS
