[BC] Off topic but, I could use some IT direction

"I have two computers in my radio station that recently autodownloaded windows updates...Now, neither one will boot.
Not even in safe mode.  I don't understand why windows would
want to wipe out a perfectly good working computer in critical service which has totally screwed up my Monday!!!  They are both XP OS

If any of you have seen or experienced a solution, let me know.
The local computer guy says he's seen it at least 3 times, and the only way he can fix it to reformat.... Ouch.!"

What specifically is occurring when you try to boot?
