DSL & Cable are fine for home or maybe office use, but reliability for
mission critical use... well, I wouldn't go there. T1 is better,
but... well I am in the Internet business and I wouldn't ever rely on a
single T1 in a truly "mission critical" environment.

One thing you could try is a DSL and other connection of your choice (T1
or cable or...) with one of the pro-sumer grade routers that will blend
2 gateways for you. It's still not "the real thing" but it's pretty
close at a price that isn't horrible.
