I recall hearing a story about a station that had a monitor point along a
stretch of road that had no useful landmarks. So the CE painted a mark on
the road so he would know where the monitor point was. One day he parked
down the road in his usual spot and walked down the road to his monitor
point. While he was walking he noticed the road has been repaved and his
painted mark was covered up. He walked back and forth where he thought the
monitor point was trying to figure out where it might have been. (Probably
one of those long ago poorly documented points!) As he was walking up and
down the road he noticed a piece of paper stuck on the fence by the side of
the road. He looked and it was a note from the lady down the road and it
was addressed to the man who came by once a month with his machine. She
wanted him to know where his mark used to be!
One station I worked at had several monitor points with very outdated
descriptions. Trying to find them the first time was difficult. None were
along the road, most were in a field or other place not near a road. Many a
time we knocked on a door of someone living nearby to see if they
remembered anyone coming by on the regular basis taking measurements. More
often than not, someone could tell us where the person stood.
