So Gary, tell us "the rest of the story". Did you steal anything? I think any statutes have run out by now so 'fess up!
Once when I was taking radial readings was right when the movie "Twister" came out. The sky was stormy-looking, wind was kicking up and me and my contract engineer are standing in a large parking lot in front of an office building. People are looking out the window of their offices watching us. A few came out toward us. Me and my engineer buddy kind of smiled at each other like "watch this". By this time the wind is *really* kicking up their skirts and/or jackets. When they asked us what's going on, we asked them urgently "Do you know where to go **right this minute** if a tornado hits? What emergency procedures have you rehearsed?" etc. They kind of skittered away with the deer in headlight look. Then we saw them pointing at us from the window with their co-workers while telling them heaven knows what. At least I hope it got them to think.

Depending upon how they approached me it was either a reasonable and polite
explanation....or...."I am measuring non-ionizing radiation here under a
procedure outlined by a Federal Agency...please keep yourself safe and stand
clear".
It was also during those many road miles I realized that with an orange
vest, hard hat, tool belt and clipboard, you can steal anything from the
side of the road.
