Barry:
First of all, thanks to you, and Curt, and all the others who work to
make this list work, including those who contribute, even if we don't
always agree.
But, I would like to make a point of work versus private life.
There is absolutely NO reason to use a work address for private
communications.
Get yourself SEVERAL disposable though permanent e-mail addresses. I
have many, including this one. If I need to cut the cord with this
list, I just delete the address.
I have a very few permeant addresses, and since I recently cut the
cord with Verizon over their lack of interest in replacing a
defective DSL "modem" at no charge, those addresses and web sites are
now gone, migrated to other locations.
GET YOURSELF SOME E-MAIL ADDRESSES!
Consider Google Mail, gmail, or (God forbid) hotmail, or AOL AIM
addresses.
That way, if your job goes away, you still have contact with the
outside world.
I have NEVER done anything but business from my business addresses.
I have NEVER migrated my personal life to my company cell phone. In
fact, it has amused my boss that I carry two cell phones, and
continue to answer the personal one. I have NO PROBLEM using my
personal phone for business purposes, and have done that MANY times.
I have been asked, "What is this number?" "It is my personal phone,
and I would appreciate it if you don't keep the number, but I am in
an area where AT&T has service, and Verizon (on my company phne) does
not, now, on to the business at hand."
While I am SURE people have kept the number, no one has ever abused
me by calling the number. But, I am not in sales.
I worked with a guy who would not take a company cell phone. He
didn't want to be "trapped" by the company plan, locked into a
company phone, and locked into company policy. He may have been
right, but I see no problem with carrying two phones, the company
phone and my personal phone. The job goes away, and I just erase the
phone, and turn it in. They can answer it if they want, and I don't
mind if they do. It is THEIR business, not mine. My business stays
on my personal phone.
Back to the issue at hand, GET YOURSELF PERSONAL E-MAIL ADDRESSES.
THEY ARE FREE, OR NEARLY SO. KEEP YOUR BUSINESS OFF THE COMPANY
SERVERS, INCLUDING THIS LIST!
Oh, the GSM standard allows two numbers on the phone. It is fairly
common in other parts of the world to have two numbers on a GSM
phone, one for work, and one for home. They even have an automatic
scheduler for the phone so from 9 to 5 (or whatever) the business
number rings on the phone, but goes to voice mail off hours. Now,
why won't AT&T allow me to have that?
