[BC] All's quiet on the AM band

Cincinnati, like a large swath of the eastern half of the nation, lost
power to a good deal of the greater area this past Sunday.

Tuning across the AM band with my Superradio was a revelation. The band was
quiet except for - tada - the radio stations! It was a revelation. WLW 700
was booming in over silence!

I remain of the opinion that superpower AM would be an excellent disaster
communication medium. Then, I am a devotee of P. Crosley, Jr.

Driving to the station on campus after I had my service entrance tacked
back onto the house, I saw people on their porches having conversations and
picnics with their neighbors. My old neighborhood has old houses with
porches. There was no flicker of TV in front rooms behind closed doors. The
experience was a reminder that modern times are not necessarily better
times. ... except for Diet Coke, of course.
