Glen:

Try this - since not all BIOS / motherboard IDE controllers will 
handle Cable Select, force the drives into Master / Slave via their jumpers.
I've hit this exact problem - one drive will boot in CS, but not with 
both plugged in.

Or, if you have the cable and the secondary IDE port on the MB, put 
the second drive on the secondary channel.  The M/S jumper settings 
will almost certainly work, unless the drive with all  the data is 
completely fried.....  Just be sure that you set one to master (the 
one that boots), and the other to slave; one drive in forced mode and 
the other in CS generally won't work at all.
