[BC] Sticky tape problem...

I remember Henry and I, getting Freon all over ourselves. It was also
good to clean a clog out of the head with your thumb. I think the Freon
was to cool your finger more than get the crap out. Good OLD days back
at Channel 26 in Chicago. Oh yea, Henry, I have a Mark 10 quad head for
a VR-1200. Missing the electrical connector, to be mounted in a display
case. Gonna show the "TV" guys at VOA what "real" video tape was
like!!!
John @ VOA / Washington.

I would not bake the tape. Its too old.
1. You can take the flanges off and hang the hub for a few days to let
it
air out naturally.
2. There used to be tape cleaners, if you have access to one.
3. Spool it slowly by hand, let the vacuum guides draw off the
moisture. You
can also put a lintless cleaning tape (remember mounting those on the
Quads
gentlemen?) and again run it slowly by hand. In the really old days,
we'ed
wash with freon, then let the tape glide over our finger as the loose
oxide
rubbed off.
Be sure to clean the pinch roller and guides with alcohol so they are
clean
and dry.
Keep the upper reel flanges off when you shuffle the tape so the air can
circulate in the tape layers.
Heating the tape at this point may make it shrink/stretch and make it
unplayable from mechanical instability.
Henry (I played Quads for decades).
