Otherwise known as a "water storage facility."  Once it is filled, the only
need for more water is to replace that lost due to evaporation.  That can be
nearly eliminated by using a pool cover.

And the water that goes down your drain doesn't simply disappear.  It goes
to a wastewater treatment facility and is recycled.  We have come a long way
in 100 years.
