[BC] Nighttime IBOC hash gets local press

Just shows you what radio has deteriorated to over the years.

I once worked with a APD/OM in NY that sued a station in the Wilkes Barre-Scranton survey area because they were trying to "sound exactly like a station in NYC" (using the same moniker and similar imaging) and he thought people that were used to hearing that NYC station would be writing it down in the Wilkes Barre-Scranton diaries and giving them ratings they didn't deserve.

In the end he got Arbitron to count any entries for 'wxyz' to count toward the NY Metro ratings for his station, how I don't know, but he did. Mind you at the time this station was on top of or very near the top of the books as it was- but in his mind "every fraction of a point mattered".

I suppose the days of actual die-hard competition went out the window about 6-8 years ago though....today I don't think anybody would devote the time and effort required to go after a station that was 'out in the sticks'.

And that's not to put down any of the people running major market stations right now, but when you have 5-8 stations under your belt you have to pick your battles wisely. When you were the sole person in charge of one station you could find time to fight ALL of the battles; even the minor ones....

WABC's PD dismisses his audience in the Poconos, claiming that it's an
"unrated" market. However, the station does show in the Wilkes
Barre-Scranton Arbitron book -- recently with a 1.0 share. If the
easternmost part of the market (Monroe County, which includes
Stroudsburg) were broken out separately, you might be looking at a 3
or 4.

I just find it strange that the big players suddenly don't care about
losing significant numbers of listeners, when less than nine years
ago, the NAB made such a big fuss about LPFM stations and the
"massive" havoc and interference they would cause.

Here's a flashback (scroll down to page 22 for some good reading):
