One cannot quantify who is listening to XM - only that there are a
particular number of paying subscribers (active accounts) Now, it may be
possible to determine the popularity of a channel, IF the subscriber is
using a PC to listen - but that is a small minority of XM users. The
majority buy XM to use on portable or mobile devices.
However, consider music to cell phones - or wifi devices - as the
supporting data grids get more and more capable.
The listener SELECTS a stream - and so that choice can be monitored and
quantified. What was selected; how long they listen, etc. With position
capable devices, it can be determined WHERE geographically the listening
occurs.
Now THAT meets many advertiser desires. Also, because the selection can
be tied to the account holder of a particular device, even the age can
be inferred - more accurately than the closest decade.
