Yes Ron, SSB's struggle for acceptance some 45-50
years ago has long since been resolved. It is the
mainstream mode for HF voice communications on the ham
bands.
There aren't that many people who remember when AM was
the only mode of "phone," on HF, and still carry
poison about the problems with congestion that you
apparently witnessed first hand. What were you, maybe
20 years old at the time? It was before my time,
regardless, so I trust your impression from the past.
What you may not realize today, currently, is how the
mode and activity of AM has taken its place as a
well-regarded specialty in the hobby. It is viewed as
a nostalgic pastime that stands on its own merits, not
in comparison with the latest technology, nor feared
as some sort of resurgent, dominant mode.
Perhaps compare to the old car collector hobby, where
people enjoy an excursion in vehicles that have a type
of allure not found in the latest models.
I don't encounter people who distain a classic car
because it does not get good gas mileage, or that it
pollutes, or that it doesn't have satellite radio.
And I would be reluctant to take a negative tone as
you have done against something a lot of people are
enjoying.
Please consider at least listening to get a sense of
the contemporary presence of AM on the bands. I hope
you may already have upgraded your license from
Technician Class to also be able to join us on AM if
you so choose.
