A good suggestion to the manufactures of the 250/1 KW, small, rack mount
transmitters is start making these low power transmitters where one
change the frequency by say dip switches. I think Nautel has already
started doing this to their J-1000 boxes.
This would be great for the engineer that maintains multiple AM sites.
You can have one ready to go for a client that is off in an emergency
situation.

Subject: [BC] Backup TX for DAX1
Its a friend's station in town here, and yes, he has a working MW1 (was
his main) as backup now, plus an ancient ITA 1000 with toobes that I
have been trying to talk him into hauling to the dump. He also has a
cherry RCA BTA250L which they bought in 1948, in the lobby, a museum
piece.
Another way to backup a 'non repairable design' as you call it, is to
order a spares set of boards - as you suggest. I would certainly look at
that option if it were my site, for a DAX, a BE, a Nautel, even an
Armstrong. We all know how fun it is to try and solder parts onto
zorched printed circuit boards after a disaster hits them.
