I was at Dayton back in the mid 90's... and I remember someone with a setup 
like that. When he keyed the mic, the end of the antenna emitted a constrant 
arc into thin air! (Within seconds, the tip was bright yellow, and in flames!) 
Laughingly, I said to the group of guys around me, "Congratulations, gentlemen.
 
We are now sterile." ;)

I believe he was transmitting on 40 meters (~7MHz). That arc was several 
inches, so the RF voltage must have been several dozen KV. Amazing stuff.
