[BC] RG article on Fessenden

I enjoyed Barry's article on Fessenden in the December issue of RG. I
wonder about some of the technology Fessenden used. Apparently 100kHz RF
was generated mechanically with an Alexanderson rotating alternator (lots
of poles?). How was it modulated? An Edison carbon microphone in series
with the field winding? Moreover, how was the received RF demodulated? The
vacuum tube did not yet exist (I think). A coherer doesn't seem like a
good linear envelope detector. Did they have some sort of solid state
diode (cat's whisker detector or similar)?
