Jeff,
The liner notes did not go that far into detail. George Martin and his son
Giles wrote two seperate mini-essays in the booklet. All it said was they
were amazed at how good the original masters sounded. They credited the
guys who did the actual recordings: Geoff Emerick, Glyn Johns, and the
others at Abbey Road. My guess is the tape they used was prior to the high
output/low noise stuff that would break down after years of storage.
That's probably how the masters were in such good shape. That, and I'd
imagine that Abbey Road has a well controlled tape library environment.
They did mention that they transfered the masters into Pro Tools and did
all the work in that domain. I'd guess there is some paper somewhere, or
will be, about what they did exactly.
I can tell you this, that when listening to the DVD-A, it sounds like it
was recorded yesterday. Quality is haunting. The sub-woofer has never had
a workout like it gets from the track "Come together."
I'll go as far to say that if anyone gets this disc and doesn't like it,
I'll refund your money. There's about eight of my crew who are now asking
Santa for a DVD-A/SACD player for Xmas. Better that instead of a Red Rider
BB Gun, so they won't shoot their eye out!! :)
BTW: If looking for a really good, yet affordable, combo DVD-A/SACD
player, check this out: http://www.oppodigital.com/default.asp I have one
and it is excellent!
