My local Apple Service Center does replace them, and it does pay to get the Applecare Service Contract on ALL Apple products.

For the record, my iPod has been going strong since 2004 and out-lasted a iBook G4, Macbook, and is now working on my Macbook Pro. I am also very happy with my iPod Nano that is a Year old.
