Depends on what kind of "basic troubleshooting" ?

The software solutions that use the computer sound card as
the hardware are fine for audio, and other things as well as
long as one is cognizant of the input limitations of the sound
 card in question.
( that's EXACTLY what I do for recording in-cylinder spark
plug current pressure traces, on running automotive engines )

Many of the USB things are fine, but require a computer.

I still drag around a 4mHz "basic" with no frills from time to time.

A scope in the hands of one who truly knows how to use one
can be a wonderful tool, otherwise it's usually just a distraction.
