I've read stories where people who didn't renew their license were put in
jail in the UK with hardened thugs. The radios keep working hence the
ability to fine for unlicensed listening. They really sock it to you for
unlicensed TV viewing. From other stories I've read the UK has turned into
a real police state with hefty fines for not putting your trash bin out and
taken in in a timely manner or being slightly overfilled so that the lid
doesn't completely close. Then there's the parking violations if your car
isn't parked in a proper manner in your own driveway. They have
neighborhood councils with fining authority that run wild with power. I
don't know how accurate those stories are but I've got them from sources
like The London Times etc. I usually surf the UK papers as they report on
things in the US that can't be reported here because the US papers are too
busy reporting on Lindsey, Brittany, Paris and the 2 1/2 men star's latest
foibles.
