If I recall correctly, back in the late 60's and early 70's Pin 3 Hot was the US standard while Pin 2 Hot was the European standard. The AES finally settled on Pin 2 Hot as the international standard, but not all manufacturers have conformed even now. (At my employer of the time, we changed everything - including manuals. My job - What fun!)
