In the case of the Dualux,  the relays got their DC supply from the  center 
tap of the DC return on the full wave rectifier supply.  The relays  were made 
by running the DC in series with each relay to ground.  When you  turned on 
the microphone the mike switch contacts shorted around the relay coil  DC, 
allowing the relay to drop instead of "pulling in", muting the speaker and  turn on 
the on air lights.   When you turned off the AC to the power  supply the on 
air lights outside the control rooms and studios would all say "On  The Air".
