Someone else here had an excellent suggestion: Make the whole codec scheme 
and firmware Open Source. That may help with the upgradability aspects.

You are correct, though, on the issue of liability. Who's going to want that 
weight on their shoulders/budgets?

It seems that the more we discuss this present system, and then factor "John 
Q Public" into the equation, the more it comes out looking like a disaster in 
the making.
