Don't know if this was a sarcastic comment, but other than for Morse code, a 
carrier really serves no purpose toward conveying information that can't be 
provided by other techniques, and save transmit power in the process.

As examples:  the L-R FM stereo signal is transmitted with no carrier, and 
so are the chrominance portions of NTSC & PAL color television.  And of 
course, the SSB mode used by the military and many hams has no carrier.
