I've been asked to do it in various ways, with various automation systems.

Some like to have the console as *the* path to air.
That way, a human being must be the final arbiter of what does, and what
does not, get to air. Usually, the automation feeds three or four channels
in such an arrangement. The PGM buss feeds air, and AUD and AUX are
 available for production.
Sometimes, the MONO buss feeds air, and is selectable to the other busses.
If someone forgets to put and leave the automation on air, disaster ensues.

Others, the automation switcher feeds air, and the console is just another
input to the automation. If someone forgets to put it in the correct configuration,
the automation can correct, either automagically, or manually by remote.

The first has production challenges with human error.
The second, also has challenges but they are fewer.

Personally, I find the second method more versatile.
In either case, personnel ( 'scuse me. "human resources" ) must understand
the functioning of the equipment to use it properly.
Personally, I'd rather be a person than a resource, but that's me.
