I have come across a few installs of SS32 that were compromised, so to speak, because someone didn't understand, and didn't want to look stupid, so they didn't ask questions about how to do it. Andy has installed and commissioned lots of systems, including some I did the install of. Follow his advice.
Usually, when I do these, the SS32 outputs are paralleled to switcher and console. The switcher output #1 comes up at the console and a second smaller switcher (4-6 inputs max). That smaller switcher also gets the console output and sometimes a third source such as satellite or other device. This provides the greatest flexibility for smooth transitions between operating modes, maintenance and continued operations if equipement fails. IF you are doing VT or background record to the SS32, this is almost the only way to wire it up.
Specific to the SS32, the complaint I get is they can't use the bypass around the console because of the NEXT closure, that fires anytime the channel buttons are hit. What I suggest is either a simple toggle switch to interrupt the sum of the channel buttons, or, take the tally from the 2nd switcher and have it operate a relay to interrupt the NEXT trigger whenever the SS32 is direct to air.
