The thing that sets volcanoes apart from earthquakes, tornadoes and
other sudden events is they give ample warning of an impending
eruption. No volcano I know of has ever 'just erupted'. Especially on
the more active volcanoes, there are earthquakes, often with a telltale
signature (harmonic tremors), and changes in the shape of the mountain,
venting steam, etc.

There are some significant volcanic risks in California. Eruptions can
affect areas much larger than the immediate eruption area because of
ash and debris. That can affect air and motorway travel, electrical
power and other things we depend on, daily.
Adrienne mentioned the Long Valley caldera in Mono County.
