We seem of a kindred spirit Robert. I thought responding to an EAS weather warning by going outside to see the show was just a thing we did around these parts.
Likewise, we recently suffered what for us was a very unusual (freak) weather event. High, straight line winds. Just two weeks ago now we officially suffered up to 95 MPH gusts as measured at our airport. I was fortunate to not have any severe damage at home, but the wind knocked over my STL tower, so my weekend was consumed with getting the station back on the air.
Normally, around these parts, when the sirens blow it is for a tornado warning. And I was awakened by sirens the night of the storm. Assuming a tornado, I turned on the TV for local weather only to discover that the sirens were sounded for straight-line winds. Apparently, as explained by the TV meteorologist, NWS had arranged, and announced, that the sirens might be used in the event of high non-tornadic winds. That's all well and good, but when and how was that information given to the public in advance? I just happened to catch that tid bit from the TV as I was preparing to gather up the Mrs. and the cat and head to the basement.
Of course now that I knew more, I did what anyone in this part of the country does when they should be sheltering. I went out to see for myself what was going on. It's nice to know that I'm a "little more normal" than most people suspect. :-)
All the best.
